Strong genetic predisposition to serious mental disorders has long been recognized, with the risk of recurrence proportional to degree of relatedness; thus, for example, individuals with two schizophrenic parents are at highest risk of the disorder (50-70%) while those only with an affected sibling have approximately a 10% increased risk.

The Genomic Psychiatry Cohort was founded by Drs. Michele and Carlos Pato to enroll a large clinical cohort of patients with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, OCD, and control participants.

The GPC was formed in 2008 from an initial population of 3,500 participants from earlier studies. Over the past 13 years, we have enrolled a total 60,000 participants. Enrollment has included 35,000 people of African, Latinx, East Asian, and European Caucasian  ancestries, including those suffering with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder  (OCD) “cases” and 25,000 “controls” (those who do not have these illnesses). The GPC most recently enrolled 10,000 subjects while at SUNY Downstate in Brooklyn between 2015-2021.
